Wedding readings are always at the heart of a wedding ceremony and can be a very tender moment for the couple and their guests. At a recent wedding many guests were from Argentina, so as a slight alternative we at legal marriage ceremonies suggested that some of the readings should be read in Spanish so that the guests would feel more included, the couple took our advice and it went down a treat, they even added in some magnificent Salsa music which gave a great and unique feel to the ceremony.
If you’ve ever been asked to do a reading at a wedding you will know that they are hard to get right. You want to find one that really reflects the couples. When it comes to readings there are some really traditional lovely ones out there, some couples like to write their own and of course there are religious readings galore. But if you are a couple looking for some alternative wedding readings then maybe one of these that we love will suit you.
From Captain Corelli’s Mandolin | For anyone
This reading was read at a ceremony which I had the pleasure of being the celebrant at, see what you think:
Love is a temporary madness,
it erupts like volcanoes and then subsides.
And when it subsides you have to make a decision.
You have to work out whether your roots have so entwined together
that it is inconceivable that you should ever part.
Because this is what love is.
Love is not breathlessness,
it is not excitement,
it is not the promulgation of eternal passion.
That is just being “in love” which any fool can do.
Love itself is what is left over when being in love has burned away,
and this is both an art and a fortunate accident.
Those that truly love, have roots that grow towards each other underground,
and when all the pretty blossom have fallen from their branches,
they find that they are one tree and not two.
Quirky isn’t it? We love the subtle little reminder that marriage has it’s up’s and downs. Or maybe you prefer this one?
The Promise by Heather Berry
“Within this blessed union of souls, where two hearts intertwine to become one, there lies a promise. Perfectly born, divinely created, and intimately shared, it is a place where the hope and majesty of beginnings reside. Where all things are made possible by the astounding love shared by two spirits. As you hold each other’s hands in this promise, and eagerly look into the future in each other’s eyes, may your unconditional love and devotion take you to places where you’ve both only dreamed. Where you’ll dwell for a lifetime of happiness, sheltered in the warmth of each other’s arms.”
and finally, who can resist some Jane Eyre
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë
“I have for the first time found what I can truly love — I have found you. You are my sympathy — my better self — my good angel — I am bound to you with a strong attachment. I think you good, gifted, lovely: a fervent, a solemn passion is conceived in my heart; it leans to you, draws you to my center and spring of life, wraps my existence about you — and, kindling in pure, powerful flame, fuses you and me in one. It was because I felt and knew this, that I resolved to marry you.”
So whatever you choose, it’s really worth of putting some thought into it. It’s a moment in time , a very special moment, so simply enjoy, and don’t forget your specs!
